Nacional - Champions of Uruguay

Club Nacional de Futbol became domestic champions of Uruguay for the 44th time yesterday after defeating Defensor Sporting 1-0 in the 2011-12 final at the Estadio Centenario.

In front of over 55,000 supporters Nacional playmaker Alvaro Recoba was the hero, scoring the only goal of the game just before half-time.

His delightful chip past Defensor goalkeeper Yonatan Irrazabal was enough for the Apertura champions to see off the Clausura champions and take out back-to-back championships.

Marcelo Gallardo also became the first foreign manager to win the Uruguayan title since the new format began in 2005.

Nacional striker Richard Porta finished the season as top-scorer with a total of 17 goals in both the Apertura and Clausura championships.

The win also means Nacional qualify directly for the 2013 Copa Libertadores group stages as well as the 2012 Copa Sudamericana.

The draw for the Copa Sudamericana will take place on June 26 in Paraguay. Stay tuned to Football Uruguay for the outcome.
